SHINE! MINDS MATTER MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCE FAIR

Find your light and build your path to wellness at the 16th annual Minds Matter Mental Health Resource Fair.

 Come explore ways to live well and support one another at this FREE, family-friendly event.

 At the event you can:
• Talk with mental health and substance use treatment providers.
• Take a mini workshop to expand your wellness toolbox.
• Get creative at the arts, crafts, and rock painting nook.
• Perform at, or watch and enjoy, the open mic.

Haiku is a popular form of writing poetry around the world today. Originating from Japan, it is the practice of observing & noticing moments in nature, writing and crafting very short poems and sharing with others. A Ginko Walk is simply a walk in nature with the intention to observe, write, gather with others to share. It is fun, peaceful and can be enjoyed by anyone wishing to be still, enjoy nature, write & share. We meet at the Sundial Bridge, Redding (Turtle Bay Museum end) at 10am - 12pm, Sunday April 21st 2024. Bring drinking water, a notebook and pencil (or your phone). Gardening Fair With Author Jenifer Jewell

Shasta College, collaborating with the University of California Master Gardner program, the Redding Public Library, and the Shasta Seed Library, will host a garden fair, April 19 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with author Jenifer Jewell. 

The event “kicks off” with a presentation by author and national award-winning public radio host, Jennifer Jewell, speaking about her new book “What We Sow” from 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. The garden fair will take place at the Redding Public Library and the ballfield between city hall and the public library on Parkview Ave in Redding.

This family-friendly event will include garden activities for children, composting demonstrations, and basic gardening advice. Expected vendors will have educational displays or demonstrations and include Ghost Pine Nursery, Cal Fire, Shasta Environmental Alliance, Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control, Clean California, Gold Leaf Nursery, Ag Commissioner, Plantable, Redding Compost Tea, Shasta Bee Club, Shasta Master Gardeners, Citizens Climate Lobby, Shasta Wildlife, the Garden Co-Op plant/seed swap, the Shasta Seed Library and Shasta College Horticulture Department, and College Corps.

Redding Cultural Cruise 2024

The annual Redding Cultural Cruise returns this April 12th & 13th to celebrate Arts, Culture & Creativity Month. Visitors will be able to view examples of fabulous art, see historical artifacts, hear great music by local performers and get a sampling of the North State culture and arts.

The event begins at 4pm on Fri the 12th with the cultural bus and car tour starting at Redding City Hall and continues through Saturday the 13th with the walking/biking tour from 11-Business closing. Participating venues are the Redding City Hall, Turtle Bay Exploration Park & The Mosaic Restaurant gallery, Shasta Historical Society, Shasta Arts Council – Old City Hall, The Art Hunger, Viva Downtown, Behrens-Eaton House Museum, Shasta Living Streets, and North Valley Art League.

Drive, bike or walk to all the Cruise stops - free admission at Turtle Bay between the hours of 5pm and 8pm on Friday night only. Cultural Cruise printed guides will be available at each location and will be available to download and print at Shasta County Arts Council’s website - www.shastaartscouncil.org.

Creative Writing with CSU Professor Rob Davidson.

Writers Forum, a group of individuals with an interest in writing which meets the second Saturday of each month from September through June, is very excited to be hosting this four-hour workshop on March 9th. Professor Davidson teaches creative writing at CSU Chico, is a dynamic speaker, the author of five books, as well as the recipient of numerous awards. He will lead us in two ninety-minute sessions with a break for lunch between. Cost is $20 for members of Writers Forum and $40 for non-members, with lunch included.

Shasta College: Transplanting and Getting the Outside Garden Ready

The second workshop will focus on Transplanting and Getting the Outside Garden Ready and will be held March 9, from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Redding Public Library in the Community Room and Patio area at 1100 Parkview Av., Redding. Workshop Topics will include:

  • Basic Permaculture Principles

  • Organic Bed Preparation for an Amazing Harvest.

  • Companion Planting

  • Hardening off and Transplanting.

  • How to Start Composting and Composting Demonstration

  • Setting Up Irrigation for A Successful Growing Season

  • Permaculture Basics

Both workshops will have three sessions of classes that last about 40 minutes each, and participants will be able to select topics for each session. There will be a $5.00 charge to cover materials and seeds at each workshop.

Master Gardeners are also sponsoring a Garden Starts Co-Op after each workshop for those who would like to participate. Participants in the Garden Starts Co-Op swap seeds or plant starts for plants/seeds that they need. For those who do not have seeds/plants to swap, Master Gardeners will also have some seeds to share with participants at both events, and the Redding Library will have seeds available from the seed library.

Mural Walk

Join Healthy Shasta, Visit Redding, and Viva Downtown Redding in a 1 mile + walk to explore Downtown Redding’s murals. We will walk to view several murals and learn about the artists. Each person will receive a map highlighting the mural locations and a Visit Redding ‘sunniest city’ sticker! The walking tour will be led by Danny Orloff from Visit Redding. The walk will take place rain or shine as part of First Fridays. Enjoy the walk and stay for dinner, shopping, or to view more art. Meet at the Steam Whistle at the corner of Butte and Market Streets. This project is funded by the Upstate CA Creative Corps and is the 3rd walk in a series of 6 downtown walks.

Shasta College: Gardening Basics

The first workshop, Gardening Basics, will be held on February 10, from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. at the Shasta College Farm in Room 4000. Workshop topics will include:

  • Gardening in containers

  • Seed starting basics.

  • Seed selection and when to start seeds for your growing zone.

  • House plants 101

  • Growing succulents

  • Repotting and rejuvenation of house plants

  • Hügelkultur beds

There will be on-site soil analysis for those who bring a soil sample. The “House Plant 101” session will feature a cuttings swap. Bring healthy cuttings in a plastic bag or place them in water to participate in the swap.

Dr Martin Luther King Day of Service Celebration

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Celebration is an annual opportunity to celebrate, commemorate, and honor the life, legacy, and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This year’s celebration will be held on Monday, January 15th, from 10 am to 3 pm at a new location: Sequoia Middle School Performing Arts Center, at 1805 Sequoia Street in Redding. The event will include performances, information booths, lunch, and a prayer and praise circle. Instead of marching to the courthouse this year, attendees will march to Redding City Hall.

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service Celebration is hosted by The Shasta Beloved Community, Redding CA. 96002 and supported by many community sponsors, listed on the flyer.

The theme of this year’s event is “Shifting the Cultural Climate through the Study and Practice of Kingian Nonviolence.” All community members are invited to attend. This event will take place rain or shine and will include the following activities:

- Information Booths from local organizations

- MLK Day of Service Celebration Program, Performances, and Bell Ringing

- Lunch provided by the Asphalt Cowboys

SCREENPLAY WRITING

Instructor:  Eric Wandrey
This course is designed introduce students to the basics of screenwriting theory and to equip them with the necessary tools for writing a screenplay for a feature-length film.

This will be achieved by:
Introducing students to standard screenplay formatting.
Teaching students the theory of screenplay structure.
Teaching the foundational skills of screenwriting such as character creation, dialogue, and scene design.
Helping students develop each of their movie ideas into a logline and beat sheet.

The first hour of each class will be dedicated to the theory of structure and the development of their beat sheets. The second hour will be dedicated to learning and workshopping the foundational skills of the craft.
